    Mini Review: The Electric State

It’s not as egregiously dumb as I was led to believe, but #TheElectricState doesn’t quite raise the bar for robot-AI films either. It looks pretty (and should given its reported budget) & at least has a cohesive storyline. But otherwise it’s as paint by numbers as you can expect.

    Mini Review: Black Bag

Steven Soderbergh’s #BlackBag is such a beautifully contained and compact film, coming in at 93 mins, that’s brimming with intrigue, interest & the perfect amount of sexiness (despite an outwardly cold exterior). Blanchett & Fassbender lead a stellar ensemble. Well worth a watch!

    Mini Review: Seven Veils

Atom Egoyan’s #SevenVeils is certainly captivating, and worked for me as a behind the scenes look at the construction of a complex opera. But narratively it just felt bogged down by layers upon layers of tension that never amounted to any kind of real catharsis. Not my favourite.

Mini Review: Can I Get a Witness?

Canadian-made #CanIGetaWitness sparks some surprisingly insightful conversations about death, dying & legacy. But the film casts a narrow lens, with its dystopic premise of mandatory suicide to control the climate crisis never really explored. Sandra Oh is fantastic as always.

    Mini Review: Novocaine

Probably one of the better early year action flicks to come out in a while, #Novocaine is a breath of fresh air. Jack Quaid is the perfect lead, bringing his signature dorky innocence to the increasingly zany action set pieces in this action rom-com. In theatres this weekend.

    Mini Review: Mickey 17

While thematically on point for director Bong Joon-Ho, its Robert Pattinson who truly nails what must be a dream oddball sci-fi role in #Mickey17, giving real emotional depth to his multiples character amongst a supporting cast in desperate need of some connective tissue.

Mini Review: Memoir of a Snail

It’s beautifully weird, with an artistic aesthetic that may not be for everyone. But #MemoirOfASnail is truly one of the most poignant & emotionally cathartic animated films of the year, with some of the most memorable lines. It’s a strong recommendation from me! #Oscars2025

  • Mini Review: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

Mini Review: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl

It’s as pleasant & buffoonish as expected, and that’s what makes #WallaceAndGromit #VengeanceMostFowl great. It’s not the most groundbreaking film, but the stop motion is as impressive as ever, and there’s a certain comfort in its wholesome simplicity. Streaming now on #Netflix.

  • Mini Review: Captain America: Brave New World

Mini Review: Captain America: Brave New World

Anthony Mackie is a worthy successor to the mantle, but #CaptainAmericaBraveNewWorld doesn’t make as bold of a statement as it should. As a Hulk / Eternals sequel, nerdy me loves seeing the puzzle pieces fit. But as a film lover, I’m a bit disappointed by this Winter Soldier copy

  • Mini Review: Love Hurts

    Mini Review: Love Hurts

Ke Huy Quan deserves the best in this world, but man does the script in #LoveHurts let him & Ariana DeBose down. It’s stylistically silly action still hits better for me than last year’s Argylle (helped by its shorter runtime), but the plot & dialogue leave much to be desired.
