Mini Review: Hit Man
Linklater’s #HitMan hits theatres this weekend and is one to not miss! Co-writer Glen Powell delivers on a multi-faceted performance in this clever & seductive flick, with some fantastic chemistry with his equally impressive co-star Adria Arjona. A surprise hit from #TIFF23. https://x.com/yearincinema/status/1793636743633388028

Mini Review: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
#KingdomOfThePlanetOfTheApes is a sound entry into the modern Apes franchise, that remains fresh by finally focusing fully on the Apes! Between a solid hero’s journey story, impressive visuals and effects & strong action set pieces, it’s a worthy weekend watch. In theatres now!

Mini Review: We Grown Now
#WeGrownNow is a powerful coming of age film, told from the perspective of 2 boys growing up in community housing in early 90s Chicago. With a strong cast & sweeping score it perfectly captures the joy, wonder, & hardships of childhood & the pain of saying goodbye. A must watch!

Mini Review: The Fall Guy
David Lietch’s #TheFallGuy works well as an ode to the under-appreciated stunt performers, filled to the brim with incredible action set pieces. It’s a fun, light movie, helmed by two charismatic stars that are masters of playful humour – what’s not to love! In theatres now.

Mini Review: The Monk and the Gun
What a great movie! #TheMonkandtheGun is such a refreshing political comedy told through the lens of beautiful rural Bhutan. Its delightfully earnest in its subversion, satire & commentary, but never loses its poignancy despite its light approach. A real pleasure of a watch!

Mini Review: Seagrass
Meredith Hama-Brown’s feature debut & TIFF23 intl critics award winner #Seagrass feels so deeply personal in its portrayal of an interracial family in turmoil. It’s slow pace, quiet aesthetic & haunting visuals may not land with all, but it helps build an authentic experience.

Mini Review: Ru
Charles-Olivier Michaud’s film adaptation of Kim Thúy’s novel #Ru is a fresh, poignant & at times tense refugee story of a Vietnamese family settling in Quebec. While its slow & quiet approach doesn’t always work, it makes up for it with a truly moving final act. A great 🇨🇦 film.

Mini Review: Monkey Man
I have huge respect for Dev Patel and what he’s created in #MonkeyMan. It’s not perfect, with its fresh but sometimes overly phrenetic action sequences, and lack of connective tissue allotted to its supporting cast. But it nonetheless still makes for an effective action flick.

Mini Review: Challengers
Luca Guadagnino’s #Challengers is a seductively kinetic take on a love triangle (or love square if you include tennis) that, despite a slightly overindulgent conclusion, is highlighted by a smart script & stellar chemistry from its 3 leads. A fantastic watch! In theatres Friday.

Mini Review: Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scargiver
It takes 1 whole movie and 40 mins for our main cast of rebels to actually talk to each other in Zack Snyder’s #RebelMoonPartTwo, which makes it near impossible to care about anything happening on screen. No amount of stylized action, while cool to look at, can redeem this one.
